think spring... er, summer!

one of the side effects of having the main SD card for my camera flake out is that i never posted a lot of pictures that i eventually recovered. (it looks like i got ~90% back, but i'm miffed that some of the exposures i'd noted for further working up are gone for good.)
but gardening catalogs are already arriving for the spring, and a particular picture in one reminded of me of some photos.
this past june, i found an odd bud in one of my gardens:

which made me wonder: what is it? one of the drawbacks of sowing several different kinds of wildflowers in the same bed is that i'm never sure what's what, nor what's a weed. i thought this one might be a kind of thistle, which i hadn't planted. but it looked interesting, so i decided to let it grow; if it turned out to be a weed, i could just rip it out.
a basketflower:

i'd had a couple bloom in 2020, but they were in a garden i don't look at very often, so i never saw the buds. i thought it was interesting-looking enough to buy more for this year. (the few that bloomed this past year went to seed, but i'm not sure if the seed is viable or if it will breed true.)
