the advantage of being an early adopter of compact fluorescent lights and tending to buy in bulk is that we have nearly a lifetime supply of the silly things. that's the disadvantage too. so, some years behind the curve, we now have an LED light. two, actually, since two lamps that can't take fluorescent bulbs burned out at once.

the bulbs are random shades of white. i'd really like to try some of the color-changing LED lights (eg the philips hue) but they're so expensive as to not be worth it.

i happened to be looking over my movie reviews for the past year, and was reminded of a couple of things.

1) if you'd told me a year ago that one of my favorite movies of the year would be a time travel action movie starring tom cruise, i wouldn't have believed you.

2) i wouldn't have believed how badly chris nolan would botch his time travel movie either. i'd thought mr. nolan was out of ideas by the end of TDKR, but i figured that was batman fatigue. now i wonder if he's told all the stories that were in him, and it's time for him to hang up his director's hat.

and on the long, sinuous tail, i'm pleasantly surprised that dreamworks seems to have figured out how to write cartoons for adults. maybe they can take over the job from pixar.
