aaah, music!
Feb. 27th, 2015 07:27 pmwednesday was the DSO's third chamber concert. those following along at home may have noticed i neglected to post about the second (yeah, right). that was brahms' clarinet quintet (op 115), which i want to track down a decent recording of. also some mozart, which doesn't do anything for me.
wednesday's concert had ravel's ma mere l'oye (mother goose) for four-hand piano. both maestro amado and hiroko yamazaki had delicate touches on the piano, and they simply seemed to be having way too much fun playing together.
then the ensemble played the original scoring of copland's appalachian spring, which i really like. it was a fine performance, though not quite as good as the philly chamber orchestra gave last year. (i'd be surprised if it were otherwise, since the philly ensemble is first-tier, and the DSO.. aint. OTOH, the DSO did do some damn good brandenburgs a few years ago...)
after the intermission, there was enescu's octet for strings (op 7). it's all complex polyphonic stuff; i found it impenetrable, though dïe überblönde really liked it. i will give enescu coolness points for writing it, though: he was only 19 at the time. i couldn't write music like that if i lived to 119.
