some like it warm
Mar. 23rd, 2021 04:36 pmblueberry bees, for instance. but there's little for them to eat right now, just pollen from typical spring flowers. my blueberries are just about to bloom, as are the dogwoods, but the bees that have emerged so far seem to have disappeared. i'm not sure if they've starved or simply moved on, but they're not at home.
this happened last year as well, but with daily high temperatures in the upper 60s (and 70 yesterday and today) i was running out of ways to keep them in cold storage. if there's a silver lining to this (iron lining?) it's that last year was so hard on the blueberry bushes that they have only a few flower buds on them. so the lack of pollinators may hardly matter. *le sigh*
i did drop off some blueberry bees with
dr_pretentious. maybe she'll have better luck with them.

i can't find whatever i'd read before about growing dahlias in buried pots. maybe it was something i saw about another tender perennial, and i thought it could be applied to dahlias. either way, i'm going to try something to make lifting them easier and less damaging to everything else in the garden. maybe a loose basketwork would do.

after doing a little reading, i see that willows' bad reputations are exaggerated but deserved. they do have enthusiastic, shallow roots, and will happily get everywhere and anywhere. however, one of my local ag extensions as a list of wet-area trees that will do just as well. maybe i'll get a willow oak, because it's clearly almost a willow.
