the prize-winning composer we heard last night is younger than we are. we heard his concerto for oboe and strings. that's the sort of music i really like -- woodwinds and strings -- and the piece was minimalistic, not only in composition, but in ensemble: the oboe was accompanied by a string quintet. i like that too.

but the second movement seemed to be all dissonances, which i found actively unpleasant. dïe überblönde didn't think it was so bad, but she says she doesn't mind dissonance as much.

that piece was framed by mozart: the musical joke -- which reminded me of PDQ bach, rather than the other way round -- and his 29th symphony. both were fine performances, but mozart just doesn't excite me.

i watched twelve monkeys, which gets across an important point for time travelers: remember to be able to prove you're from the future, or people might just think you're a few cards short of a deck. it's not a bad time travel movie; since gilliam directed, it's a bit better than that other bruce willis time travel movie (looper). it has a more interesting imagined future (and present), too.

the bioterrorist's itinerary really sounded like a starting position for the board game pandemic: he started in philly, then LA, shanghai, bangkok, delhi, paris(?), and rio.

the reveals are well-done, though a couple were telegraphed. that's probably a limitation of the medium. still, it doesn't challenge either of our favorite time travel movies: bill and ted's bogus journey or edge of tomorrow. still, worth seeing.

i also watched mad max: beyond thunderdome. as much as i thought there was too little there there in the original, i was pleasantly surprised that this had more substance than i expected. not a lot of substance, but more than i expected for an action movie.

i like the tribe of kids: plausible backstory, some reasonable guesses as to what their language might sound like, and a good dash of cargo cult. apparently the tribe is one of the parts of the movie that people either love or hate; i thought it worked.

i was amused that aunty entity (tina turner) had a turbine-powered car in which to chase max. while the tribe seems to have nothing beyond neolithic technology, bartertown is able to keep turbo-machinery running in a dusty environment. i am impressed with their ingenuity.

it's worth seeing, too. i've looked at the trailers for mad max: the furious rebootification, and it looks wretched. i'll probably wait 30 years after it comes out to see it. that worked for beyond thunderdome

for thems what cares about such things: since marvel/disney isn't waiting for the spoiler lightcone about avengers 2: hey, can we make a gigabuck with this one? -- they've released plenty of them already -- we expect to see the movie the tuesday or wednesday after it's released. assuming the reviews don't suck, of course. some of the commentary i've seen on the movie makes a little worried it might, but i'll find out soon enough.
