yesterday, we had a windstorm that knocked out power around here for about 8 hours. that would have been more than enough time for all the food in the 'fridge to go bad. we had a similar power loss -- about six hours -- a month or so ago. so, the generator is slowly starting to pay for itself. at this rate, it should be mostly paid off by the time it needs to be replaced.

the situation is a bit odd because we bought the generator when we were having major power outages a number of times a year, and had lost hundreds of dollars of food as a result. then, the power company upgraded one of the lines near here, and we had a several years where the generator as a mere convenience. i think the longest it ran in that time was about two hours. what would have been long enough for some food to go bad, but we'd been keeping bags of ice in freezer out of paranoia.

i'm never sure whether i want the generator to pay off or not pay off. obviously, if it never pays for itself, it was a waste of money, but the implication of it paying off is lots of bad weather. i'm not entirely sure i really need to be proven right that badly.
