a little shopping, a little gardening
Jan. 5th, 2021 08:33 pmsince we're both working from home these days, we tried grocery shopping in the afternoon to avoid the hypothetical evening crowds. (we're on a funny shopping schedule for the same reason.)
well, we avoided the crowds. also, a modest amount of what we wanted. tuesday afternoon seems to be one of the times the store restocks, so the aisles were full of boxes and guys shelving their contents, and the shelves themselves had some ominous empty spots. so we'll probably have to run another errand out into the land of the raging plague at some point.
i'd also gone out to pick up a new a new smoke/CO detector; the latter wears out before the former, i've learned. and since home despot has just put out its display of seeds, i bought a bunch of packets to show to dïe überblønde. they'll all be planted, it's just a question of where: things she likes will be planted in my gardens; things she doesn't will be used for guerrilla raids on the untended beds in the local park.
the important conclusion is that she likes warm colors like i do. good; this makes picking things much easier. so, yes to the red nasturiums, yes to the blanketflower, and yes to what i think is the better of two wildflower mixes i picked up. we also have the same reaction to the other one: the red, yellow, and pink flowers that dominate it look good, but not with the handful of blue ones thrown in for variety. (though i think a blue and yellow mix might be striking.)
she didn't like the russell's lupines either. i think they're ok, but i'm not sure they'll get enough winter cold to flower. on the other hand, one of the wild types of lupines took over my gardens when i tried them, and it took me years to rip them all up. i guess people visiting the park will find out. :)
two new seed and plant catalogs have also arrived, so we'll get to go through those. there is, though, a lot of overlap between catalogs % the one place that specializes in heirloom seeds.
