my slightly shinier, slightly newer computer keeps crashing. problem: static discharges from low humidity bring it down with a USB kernel panic.

something is clearly wrong with it, but i'm having trouble figuring out what. they're related to touching the trackball, which is also new. i can't tell if the machine is just touchier than my old one, or if the USB connection isn't properly implemented.

the USB jack shell should be a ground plane, which ultimately connects to the computer's ground plane, so touching the trackball shouldn't do anything. unless the voltage levels aren't the same because the ground isn't grounding.

grr!

for the moment, i'm just running the humidifier more, but i'd like a better solution.
