two weeks ago, S and i visited the american visionary art museum, which collects art by people with no formal art training. their collection ranges from the odd to the sublime, with many objects made by people with talent but no formal art training. and it also includes products of obsession and insanity.
i should have taken more pictures. there's an old line about photography that one shouldn't forget to enjoy the scenery while taking pictures of it. i tried it. eh; i think i prefer taking pictures. not only did i see so many interesting things that i can't remember all of them, it's impossible to show the things that i do remember.
so, have a small sampling of things from the museum.
leslie payne built mock airplanes to LARP in. i can't think of any other term for what he did than that.

there was an exhibit of "art spaces", outdoor spots decorated with odd things. i liked this one the best; it's a photo of a photo, unfortunately, and there's glare from an inconveniently-placed window:

the museum has two buildings, about a block apart. between them, they have some large pieces suitable for outdoor display, like this guy:

S wondered what sounds it would make if it could move. if i didn't already have too many silly projects on my to-do list, i'd pick up that gauntlet. it seems like it could be a fun robotics project.
the second building had a display of kinetic art – something i wish i had video of – along with a couple of art vehicles, and other large works. one of the latter is this wooden orchestra, painted with high-gloss paint, which makes the figures look like they're plastic:
