dive right in!
Mar. 25th, 2013 11:04 pmthis is a huge (20k px by 3k px) panoramic photograph of ubehebe crater, little hebe crater (on the right in this view), and the surrounding landscape. the field of view in the picture is close to 180°.

i emphatically recommend looking at the full size image. there's a lot of detail there. for example, about a quarter of the way from the left edge is a parking lot with two cars in it. that's the trailhead, a half mile away and 300' below the viewpoint. we didn't realize quite how tall the crater rim was, nor quite how difficult the climb up the talus would be. we would have taken it a lot slower had we known. as it was, it was a most excellent cardiac stress test. (we passed.)
a couple of detail shots for those unwilling to gaze into the abyss:

3 more, though they're very similar. there is another version of the panorama that brings out the detail in the shaded side of ubehebe crater. unfortunately, my photoshop fu is weak, and i don't know how to make a more sensibly blended join in the image. (other than the default image blending tool, which happily destroys the color balance and maims the contrast in the image.)
if somebody is stronger in the photoshop side of the photography, and is looking for a disciple, i'm willing to learn.
