after watching transcendence, i took a look at the current lone ranger. what can i say about it? the first trailer was (about) a train wreck, which said it all. the second trailer didn't improve on that.

while our boy depp's performance as tonto left much to be desired, arnie hammer (john reid/lone ranger) and the supporting characters soldiered on so, i can't say it was due to the writing or directing. not that that was anything to be desired.

the movie seemed to have been rewritten repeatedly during shooting, and it couldn't decide if it was comedy, drama, or magical realism. or maybe old tonto -- er, he's describing the lone ranger's adventures to a young boy in a literary frame -- is not just an unreliable narrator but a complete whacko. not that i suspect the writers of that kind of skill. i suspect, though, the movie was killed and ordered wrapped up with too little shot to be coherent without the narration

in any event, there were only two points clear about the movie: it was squarely aimed at boys and young teens, and much of the staging -- heroic derring-do in or on top of trains -- looked like it was meant to be adapted as theme rides for one of the disney-foos (land, world, universe...).

profits of the caribbean hasn't stood the test of time, except for depp's defining role as jack sparrow. the rest is improbable canned adventure, right down to the female lead, the daughter of a british colonial governor, knowing far, far too much about sailing and pirates. but at least the mcguffin was handled well, and the SFX for the black pearl's damned crew are suitably impressive. and i got to see geoffery rush play another over the top character. (i first saw him as casanova frankenstein in mystery men... and since as lionel louge in the king's speech. both of those are worth seeing.)

i think PofC is still worth seeing, but with an itchy fast-forward finger... there's a fair amount of dross in the movie (overdone fight scenes, childish comedy, and some flat dialogue).
