i had myself a very jewish christmas
Dec. 25th, 2014 08:16 pmchinese food and movie, of course. tradition!
the movie in question was iron sky, a very low budget (== crowd-funded¹) bit of nonsense about a moon-nazi invasion of earth. does a wonderful job parodying then-current american politics. worth watching if you like deliberately silly movies. skip otherwise.
edit: 1: this claims it was made on a budget of €5M, which isn't bad. by way of comparison, the king's speech, a VRY SRS movie, was made on $15M.
i also recently saw persepolis, an animated adaptation of marjane satrapi'scomic book autobiographical graphic novel of the same name, about growing up in revolutionary iran. satrapi was one of the directors, so i can only imagine the movie is the way she wants it.
i think the story suffers from adaptation to a different medium, and it takes forever to get moving. throughout the first 30-45 minutes (or first third to half of the movie) i kept wanting to give up, but soldiered on because the original is famous and like that. i can't say my persistence was rewarded, but at least the pace picked up after a while.
since i haven't read the original, i have no idea what that's like. perhaps fans of the original will like the movie. the animation isn't bad, but isn't stellar either, so i can't say it'll appeal to animation fans. maybe coming-of-age-movie fans will like it, as will people who like autobiographies; satrapi doesn't gloss over the suckitude of parts of her life. but for the notional general audience? umm... give it a pass, i guess.
