kanzashi flower:

kanzashi

"kanzashi" sounds like a martial art known only to the seventy secret masters trained in the seventeen subtle methods, but it's just a way of making flowers from scraps of fabric. this flower started as five fabric circles, which were folded into quarters and then sewn and gathered on the round edge, making petals. the petals are all together on the same thread.

ideally, the button and backing would have been on the same thread too, but i got a knot in my thread and couldn't get it out. so, those are on their own thread, which is still attached, so i can sew the pin to it (just visible behind the bottom petal).

screwing around with scratchboarding:

scratchboard

it's a simple medium: one scratches lines in a black-coated paperboard sheet to make images that look like engraving. the basic tools are an exacto knife and a rounded blade which makes wider lines. the photo is some practice and an attempt to copy the mushroom in the sample image.

i'm not very good at it, but since i have an exacto knife and the boards are cheap, i might keep at it.

moveable type:

type

i'd mentioned that the history of books lecture gave out type. it looks like i got three letters from one fontset, and two random italic letters (or maybe an "a" and a zero) from other fonts. the mysterious punctuation park has gotten more mysterious, as it's disappeared from a sealed ziplock baggie (it was with the flower).

regardless: look, a fundamental information technology!
