i'm finally back to working up last year's vacation pictures... less than a month before we disappear on our next vacation.

i left off with us just ready to leave salzburg. while waiting for the plane to take off, i saw a double rainbow:

Double Rainbow

our cunning plan was to have a day in budapest to see the city ourselves, but we arrived during a heatwave, when the high temperature was 104°. so, we stayed in our hotel room until they kicked us out – we did get a late checkout – and then made our way to our ship. while boarding wasn't supposed to start for a few more hours, the cruise line was letting people drop off the luggage and hang out in the ship's common areas.

Pair of Vikings

our ship was the nearer one.

budapest is unusually proud of its bridges, or the tour guides are unusually willing to talk them up. i can't tell. since the ship was moored near one of them, i got some good pictures from the upper deck of the one in the picture. but not enough to assemble into a high-resolution panorama, and that's were my previous attempt to work up these pictures ended. oops. i'll probably get back to that. eventually.

otherwise there was a good view from the upper deck;

Nearby Buildings

Shore Panorama

i'd forgotten how bad apple's phone panoramas were. the phone certainly has the brains to produce a proper (that is, rectilinear) panorama rather than the hideously distorted extruded panorama product it makes, but it doesn't. i won't make that mistake again.

our cabin was adequate:

Cabin: Stateroom

that was the "dump everything out" phase in preparation for "put everything away" phase of moving in.

Cabin: Veranda

Cabin: Smallest Compartment on the Ship

it was a little smaller than the manner to which we'd become accustomed the year before:

tent: main room

tent: bathroom

but it does have the advantage that it moves under its own power, so we could unpack once and visit multiple cities.

the heatwave broke overnight, ending in rain. but we'd signed up for a walking tour of the city, so we started our tours in the rain:

St. Whozit the Wet

this is the house where ignaz semmelweis grew up, now a museum:

Ignaz Semmelweis House and Museum

one of the entrances to the verkart bazar, a courtyard with gardens.

Varkert Bazar Entrance

one end of chain bridge:

Chain Bridge

a couple of street scenes:

Budapest Staircase

Rainy Street

we visited some famous church, but i can't be arsed to figure out which one, and in any case, i have little use for catholic iconography. so have some pictures of the non-representational decorations:

Church: Column

Church: Vault Decorations

the rain stopped as we were returning to the ship, and we went by the pesti vigado, a concert hall.

Pesti Vigado

having gone around a corner, i saw curious detail:

Pesti Vigado Attila

they're embracing the legend that arpad, the first historical king of hungary, is descended from attila the hun. there's no connection, despite the similarities of the english names.

after lunch, we visited a couple of well-known tourist traps, starting with szamos chocolates. they have a museum and candy store, with all sorts of interesting things it in.

i'm impressed by the detail on the marzipan model of the parliament:

Marzipan Parliament

at the end of the tour, they let us make our own chocolate candies, with three kinds of chocolate chips and two kinds of nuts:

Fondling Chocolate 2

Our Chocolates

and then off to zwack distillery, where they make, um, zwack:

Zwack Unicum

as the red cross indicates, it was originally intended as a medicinal drink. it tastes awful enough that it probably kills something.

some views as we were leaving the city:

Buda Castle from the Danube

Parliament from the Danube: Straight

Margaret Bridge Figurehead

there's more pictures in an album.
